5 Questions For Your Mentor

I had the opportunity to catch up with the creator of the Learning Leader Podcast, Ryan Hawk last week. Thanks, Mike Wolff. He has been working on his podcast for three years and is over 240 episodes in!

Before I talked to him, I picked this hour-long interview episode with entrepreneur Brian Scudamore, the founder of 1-800 Got Junk in Vancouver, Canada.

Brian talked about two things I found interesting among others:

His morning routine — He gets up at 5:55 am for his power hour:

  • Focus on self
  • Exercise
  • Study French, Italian (other languages)
  • Spend moments learning before the kids wake up

Two, his view on the side hustle — “I don’t know if you can live the full potential if it’s a side hustle. You need to give it full effort. Imagine the possibility if you only focused intently on one thing.”

When I asked Ryan, what podcast he would recommend on mentorship and coaching for my readers, he shared Jim Collins!

Why did I like it?

His view on being mentored – “Never go to a meeting without writing down 5 questions prior to the meeting and being prepared. Always follow up the meeting with at least a page of notes — share those with your mentor.”

Best advice from his mentor – Always ask yourself — “How can I make myself useful to the world?” This was advice originally given to him by Peter Drucker

I highly recommend these podcast episodes and the series. Ryan is a stand-up guy and one of the most curious interviewers I have met.

Have a great week!

Colin
